What Are Dermal Fillers?

Bijoux Med Spa Border Image

Dermal fillers are injectable, gel-like substances designed to restore lost volume, smooth wrinkles, and improve facial contours. As we age, our skin normally loses collagen, elastin, and fat, which help keep it plump, firm, and youthful. This gradual loss of volume can lead to fine lines, hollow areas, and sagging skin. Dermal fillers provide a non-surgical way to regain facial features by replenishing volume beneath the skin’s surface.

These treatments are often used to:

  • Soften facial creases and wrinkles
  • Add fullness to the lips and cheeks
  • Define facial contours such as the jawline or chin
  • Revive areas that have lost volume due to aging or weight loss

If performed by a qualified medical professional, dermal fillers can create natural-looking, youthful results with minimal downtime.

What Are Dermal Fillers Made Of?

Dermal fillers are made from biocompatible materials that naturally occur in the body or mimic them closely. The two main types are Hyaluronic Acid (HA) and Calcium Hydroxylapatite (CaHA).

WHAT ARE DERMAL FILLERS?

Dermal fillers are injectable substances used to add volume, smooth wrinkles, and enhance facial contours.

There are two main types of dermal fillers. Hyaluronic Acid (HA) Dermal Fillers (Juvederm, Restylane,  and Versa) and Calcium Hydroxylapatite (CaHA) Dermal Fillers (Radiesse).

  • Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in the body that helps maintain skin hydration and volume. HA fillers add volume, smooth wrinkles, and enhance facial contours by attracting and holding water molecule
  • Calcium hydroxylapatite is a mineral-like compound found in bones. Calcium hydroxylapatite is mixed with a gel like substance to create a soft filler but strong filler. CaHA fillers provide volume and stimulate collagen production, offering a more robust and longer-lasting effect.

PREGNANT OR BREASTFEEDING:

Dermal fillers are not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding individuals due to potential risks to the fetus or the infant.

ALLERGIES:

Known allergies to the components of the filler, such as hyaluronic acid or lidocaine, may contraindicate the use of certain fillers.

ACTIVE INFECTIONS:

Individuals with active skin infections, such as cold sores, acne, or other skin conditions, may be advised to delay filler treatments until the infection resolves.

AUTOIMMUNE CONDITIONS:

Those with autoimmune diseases or conditions that affect the immune system may have an increased risk of adverse reactions to fillers.

BLEEDING DISORDERS:

Conditions that affect blood clotting, such as hemophilia or the use of anticoagulant medications, may increase the risk of bruising and bleeding at the injection site

HISTORY OF KELOID SCARING:

Individuals with a history of keloid or hypertrophic scarring may be at an increased risk of abnormal scarring after filler injections.

UNREALISTIC EXPECTATIONS:

Unrealistic expectations or a lack of understanding about the limitations of dermal fillers may be a contraindication. A thorough consultation is essential to ensure that the individual has realistic expectations

RECENT SURGICAL PROCEDURES:

MEDICATION INTERACTIONS:

Certain medications, such as blood thinners or medications that affect the immune system, may increase the risk of complications or interfere with the healing process.

NEUROLOGICAL DISORDERS:

Individuals with certain neurological disorders may need careful consideration before undergoing filler treatments

The duration varies depending on the type of filler used. Some last as little as six months, while others can provide results for up to two years. On average filler last about 1 year.

Discomfort is usually minimal. The filler we use contains a local anesthetic. In addition to that we apply topical numbing agents before hand. Dental blocks may also be administered prior to getting lip filler in specific.

Common side effects include redness, swelling, and bruising at the injection site. Serious complications are rare when administered by a skilled professional.

Downtime is typically minimal. You may experience swelling for 1-3 days afterwards with it lasting no more than 7 days. You may experience bruising which typically resides in 5-7 days. No strenuous exercise for 24 hours. No facial massaging for 1 week (see our pre and post care instructions at the bottom of the page)

Hyaluronic acid fillers can be partially or fully reversed almost immediately using an enzyme called hyaluronidase.

Calcium hydroxylapatite like Radiesse can not be quickly reversed but can be broken down gradually over a few treatments with saline or sodium thiosulfate.

Yes, many people combine fillers with other cosmetic procedures like neurotoxins, chemical peels, biostimulators or laser treatments for comprehensive rejuvenation. However, these treatments might have to be administered on separate treatment visits just depending on the treatment area and products / treatment modalities being used.

Your provider will assess your needs and recommend a suitable filler based on the areas you want to address and your desired outcomes.
